These are the biographies to read this Women's History Month
Happy Women's History Month!
When the world feels like a dumpster fire, I am so glad we still have books.
If you've read Ms. Feminist Know-It-All, my column with Ms. Magazine, you'll know how much I love books and the escape reading provides in just such a time.
But it's not just escape, of course. Books provide inspiration, information, new perspectives, relaxation, connection, grounding, and the all-important lessons from the past that we must learn to avoid their repetition.
So, of course, for this WHM, I am providing members with book lists.
But you know me. These aren't just any book lists. These are books I know and that have impacted me. I focus on books that may have been overlooked in the past or written by people who have been. They are mostly by women and queer writers of the global majority. Of course, these books are feminist, and of course, I include all women.
Where better to start than biographies? These are books by and about women, known and unknown, who've left a legacy in their corners of the world – sometimes in all the world. Writing a biography is a complex and layered art in itself. Making a person's unique life resonate with all kinds of readers is a skill that not everyone masters. Even when a subject has led an extraordinary life, their story in the wrong hands will fall short.
And readers, you deserve better! You deserve the biographies on this list.
